Piles in a Nutshell: Causes, Diagnosis & Symptoms

According to the Ayurvedic concept, the causative factors of piles are mainly interconnected with weak digestive fire. A few important causes are a sedentary lifestyle, irregular bowel habits, low fiber diet, prolonged straining etc.  Weak digestive fire hampering with proper absorption and metabolism of food is a prime factor in the diseases like constipation, piles, fissure, ulcerative colitis etc where each condition again plays as an aetiological factor for the manifestation of having piles due to mild to severe form of digestive fire imbalance.  Besides this, the ill-advised fad diet and irregular bowel movements meddle with stomach related digestive power, prompting poor gastric to intestinal assimilation and retention of supplements prompting obstruction with stressing propensity of straining activity during defaecation which further plays as a risk factor for visibility of piles mass in case of external piles.

The primary factors concerning piles other than weak digestion strength are mainly described as congenital, straining during defecation, diarrhea, dysentery and faulty habits of defecation while the secondary causes are due to portal obstruction, pregnancy and abdominal tumors that gives gradual and steadily increased pressure of the frequent womb over the veins ultimately result into increased pressure within all their venous supply.

With the aggravation of the above-mentioned factors, the signs exhibited depend upon the type of piles. Internal piles or hemorrhoids are usually present with painless rectal bleeding while external hemorrhoids may produce few symptoms such as significant pain and swelling around the anus.

The exact diagnosis of haemorrhoidal grading is necessary to decide the course of management without surgical intervention. The diagnosis of piles is confirmed when the blood which drips into the toilet bowl is bright red in nature and is free, separated from stool due to frequent association with the mucous discharge with bleeding and swelling around the anal area,  from internal hemorrhoids.
